What is chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is one of the most important color pigments related to photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy into chemical energy by synthesizing some organic compounds. Chlorophyll actually exists in all organisms that can create photosynthesis, including green plants, prokaryotic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and eukaryotic algae. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from light, which is then used to convert carbon dioxide into carbohydrates. Chlorophyll of plant Chlorophyll is the main pigment for photosynthesis in plants. It is a family of lipid-containing pigments located in the thylakoid membrane. Chlorophyll absorbs most of the red and purple light but reflects green light, so chlorophyll appears green, and it plays a central role in the light absorption of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is a magnesium porphyrin compound, including chlorophyll a, b, c, d, f, prochlorophyll and bacterial chlorophyll, etc. Chlorophyll is not very stable and will be decomposed by light, acid, alkali, oxygen, and oxidants. Under acidic conditions, chlorophyll molecules easily lose the magnesium in the porphyrin ring and become pheophytin. Chlorophyll has many uses such as hematopoiesis, providing vitamins, detoxification, and disease resistance. Related Categories Chlorophyll is divided into chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, chlorophyll c, chlorophyll d, chlorophyll f, prochlorophyll and bacterial chlorophyll and so on.
Chlorophyll name Place of existence Maximum absorption band
Chlorophyll a Among all green plants Red light and blue violet light
Chlorophyll b Higher plants, green algae, Euglena, tube algae Red light and blue violet light
Chlorophyll c Diatoms, dinoflagellates, brown algae, staghorn algae Red light and blue violet light
Chlorophyll d Red algae, cyanobacteria Red light and blue violet light
Chlorophyll f bacterial Non-visible light (infrared band)
Protochlorophyll Yellow plants (seedling stage) Close to red light and blue-violet light
Photosynthesis Photosynthesis refers to the process by which green plants use light energy through chloroplasts to convert carbon dioxide and water into organic matter that stores photosynthetic energy and release oxygen. The first step of photosynthesis is the absorption of light energy by chlorophyll and the ionization of chlorophyll. The resulting chemical energy is temporarily stored in adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and eventually carbon dioxide and water are converted into carbohydrates and oxygen.   WWW.AGOODLAMP.COM
